Named for the chief engineer of the Southern Pacific Railroad, Major James Converse, who in 1877 bought a tract of land including the town site, The City of Converse has grown into a thriving community. Today Converse has a land area of more than seven square miles and a population of 18,198 according to 2010 Census Data.
