Universal City

Also known as the “Gateway to Randolph AFB”, Universal City is a dynamic residential community situated approximately 15 miles northeast of downtown San Antonio, just off Interstate 35 and east Loop 1604. Celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2010, the city has come a long way since its inception in 1960, and has been recognized for its commitment to excellence and a forward-thinking approach to development and municipal operations.

With a population of just under 20,000, the vibrant city is home to a myriad of retail and commercial establishments. Its location adjacent to Randolph Air Force Base puts Universal City in a position to capture the more than 17,000 personnel who work at the base, as well as a regional trade area of more than 70,000 people. One of the most recent additions to the Universal City business community is Northlake Business Park – a 178 acre Master Planned Community located just off Loop 1604 at Kitty Hawk, which is focused primarily on retail, office and warehouse tenancy. A great diversity of industry is represented by the companies that call Northlake Business Park home, speaking to its investment value and strategic strengths.

An abundance of “green” practices help Universal City set itself apart from other communities. In 2009, Universal City was recognized by the EPA as the first Green Power Community in Texas, thanks in part to the city’s progressive use of Windtricity. Additionally, in 2010, Universal City was acknowledged as having the best tasting water in Texas (groundwater category) by the Texas Water Utilities Association. Energy efficient lighting, windows and HVAC systems have been installed throughout city facilities, LED traffic signals are used on city streets, and soon residential street lights will be converted to LED as well.

The jewel in the city’s crown is the Olympia Hills Golf Course & Conference Center, which is owned and operated by the city itself. The course is maintained by the use of grey (recycled) water, which keeps it in optimal playing condition year-round, even during periods of drought. The course offers a challenging 18 holes and was voted one of the nation’s top public courses by Golf Magazine, and best golf course in the Metrocom by readers of the Northeast Herald.

A progressive and exciting city, a wealth of business opportunities and plenty of military pride… these are just some of the many reasons why Universal City is considered one of the most dynamic municipalities in the state of Texas.
